Identification of North American Birds & Trees
I'm the author and illustrator of books, etc. about nature, including the Sibley Guides to Birds and Trees. For me, nature study is all about seeing patterns, understanding relationships, and finding order in what appears to be chaos. The idea of identifying a Gray Birch from a mile away, or finding a single LeConte's sparrow (a small, secretive, brown bird) in the state of New Jersey, might seem preposterous, but if you know what to look for, and target your search at the right place and time, in the right habitat, you have a reasonable chance of success. There is a fundamental sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that comes from developing that deep understanding of the natural world.
