Highly soluble commercial fertilizers release all at one time and make plants sick, weak, and susceptible to insects and disease. The plant looks good at first, but progressively runs out of energy (fertilizer). When the plant needs the fertilizer the most (at seed set, setting fruit, and reproduction periods) it is gone. This is why your garden looks good at first, but later in the summer fails.
