THE COMPREHENSIVE SOURCE FOR THE RESTORATION-LANDSCAPE INDUSTRY
American Native Plants is committed to growing and distributing native plants that are critical to the establishment of biodiverse natural ecosystems. Since 1998, we have provided millions of plants to landscapers and contractors throughout the mid-Atlantic region and beyond. We carry an inventory of over 400,000 native trees, native shrubs, and herbaceous native plants.

We've grown native plants for restoration, mitigation, landscaping and enhancement for biodiverse installations that benefit insects, birds, mammals, aquatic organisms and their associated ecosystems. These include projects targeting wildlife habitats, wetlands, riparian buffers and stormwater management. We grow a full line of containerized woody and herbaceous native plants and regularly contract-grow for specific projects. Customers can pick up plants at the nursery or we can deliver or ship direct to your jobsite. Our plant availabilities are constantly updated on our website. Call or email for a quote!

    Native Trees and Shrubs:

We are dedicated to promoting biodiverse native ecosystems and therefore offer hundreds of native species for your planting projects.

    Tubelings

American Native Plants stocks a wide selection of trees and shrubs grown as tubelings. Our woody seeds are planted and grown in Anderson Band Pots that measure 2.5” x 2.5” x 5” deep. Tubelings are sold individually or in flats of 36. Depending on the conditions of the planting site, trees and shrubs as tubelings can have a significantly higher survivability rate than bareroot plants thanks to their young and healthy root systems fully encased in the media that surrounded them since germination from seed. Tubelings are also very easy to transport and plant.

    Containers #1, #2, #3, #5, and #7

Our native trees and native shrubs are available in containers for easy transport and planting convenience. Trees transported in containers that are removed upon planting have well-established root systems which will minimize transplant shock usually associated with bareroot plants. As a general rule, the bigger the container number, the larger the size of the tree or shrub. We offer native trees in containers #1, #2, #3, #5, and #7 (select species in #10 and #15).

    • #1 pots, 6 1/2” diameter, 7” tall
    • #2 pots, 8 ¾” diameter, 8 ½” tall
    • #3 pots, 11” diameter, 9 5/8” tall
    • #5 pots, 10 ¾” diameter, 11” tall
    • #7 pots, 14” diameter, 11 ½” tall

The final volume and height of your container and tree is determined seasonally and by species.

    Contract Grown

Whether you are looking for mature plants to fill out your landscaping job or need a large quantity of a specific native plant, we offer contract growing to our business clients throughout the year. This is the most effective way to insure availability of plants when you need them.

    Hardgoods:

We are a one-stop shop for all of your native plant restoration, reforestation, wetland and landscaping needs. In addition to our native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, we offer various high-quality hardgoods for your convenience.

    Environmental Protective Signage

Looking to integrate environmental protective signage into your restoration or landscaping project? We offer a variety of signage options such as plastic screen printed signs to help protect sensitive or newly planted areas. Aluminum materials and custom designs are available upon request.

    Tree Shelters

The native plants we provide are all high-quality and ready to grow at your planting site, but some may require extra protection to flourish. Our 4 ft. tall by 6” diameter mesh shelters offer good protection from deer browse. These shelters are photodegradable and come separately or as a kit complete with wood stake and cable ties for support. Small rodents will not find shelter within the mesh so they remain exposed to predators. The shelters can be cut with scissors as needed if the height needs to be shortened for any reason or if you need to wrap them around more stocky plants.

    Mulch Discs

Mulch discs are a cost-effective way to protect your new native trees, native shrubs, and native plants. They are constructed from durable coir (coconut) fibers and fit easily around the base of your plant. They last for multiple years and allow water, air, and nutrients to slip right through while suppressing the germination of weed seeds. Our mulch discs are available in a variety of diameters and can easily and affordably replace traditional mulching products by reducing labor costs significantly, especially on sites with difficult access or terrain.

    Native Herbaceous Perennials

We are dedicated to promoting biodiverse native ecosystems and therefore offer hundreds of native species for your planting projects.

    Plugs (72 trays)

American Native Plants offers all of our herbaceous native plants in convenient 72 cell trays of plugs. Each cell is 1.63” x 1.63” x 2.38” deep. Minimum order per species is ½ tray (36 plugs). Weather permitting, these smaller-size herbaceous plants are often planted directly into properly prepared sites.

    Quarts

If your specifications require larger herbaceous native plants, we offer convenient quart-sized containers. Plants in these containers have received more growing time than plugs and have had the opportunity to develop solid root systems. Quarts from plugs can usually be produced in about 3 weeks, depending upon time of year and availability of starter plants.

    Container #1

Our native trees, native shrubs, and herbaceous native plants are also available in standard #1 containers. These containers hold about three quarts of soil and depending on the time of year and starter material, can be produced in about 6 weeks. Herbaceous native plants purchased in this size are ready to plant and just about their full size. If you need instant landscaping, container #1 plants are your best bet.

    Contract Grown

Whether you are looking for mature plants to fill out your landscaping job or needing a large quantity of a specific native plant, we offer contracting growing to our business clients throughout the year. This is the most effective way to ensure the availability of plants when you need them. Contact us for details.

    Co-Owner / Vice President

As a Registered Professional Forester in Maryland, I spent 17 years with Baltimore County Environmental Protection overseeing forest harvests, and handling enforcement on development projects and along the County’s 175 miles of shoreline. I saw increased requirements for restoration and mitigation using native plants. I started the nursery on a small scale as Maryland Natives Nursery in the early 90’s. The original site was on the back two acres of our family’s home in Kingsville, MD, where we lived from the mid-50’s on. As a teenager, I loved hunting and exploring in the fields and woods that surrounded the property. My love and fascination with nature continues to this day. One of my biggest rewards is to see the same passion in all of the great people who work with me here at American Native Plants.

    Co-Owner / President

My road to native plants started 2 hours away from our present day Maryland nursery, in the pines of southern New Jersey “just” 50+ years ago. We (my Mom, sister and I) lived in an 1890’s shingle-sided house in a nearly deserted hamlet called White’s Bog. All around us were cranberry bogs, woods and fields. The woods croaked with a million amphibious voices, migrating birds flocked in blue fall skies and panzer-shelled snappers glared at us from the sandy roadsides. Squirrels and raccoons nested in mysterious, beckoning, ramshackle buildings. It was a paradise for kids to explore, even if my Mom, who had almost no chance for adult conversations, remembers the place less fondly.

It only lasted a year or so before my Dad came back from his military assignment and we moved to more urban settings. The connection to nature has endured for me and looking back explains many subsequent events and choices.

As for White’s Bog? It is a state park now. It is dedicated to a largely forgotten 19th century horticulturist, Elizabeth White, who cultivated the native blueberry, behind the house next door to our old place.

I have had a lifelong interest in the natural world and have completed the Master Gardener and Habitat Steward certifications. Inventory Control

Born in northern California, but raised in Baltimore City, I was lucky enough to have grown up in an unusually wooded part of town. This kindled an early love for nature which never faded. After working for years in windowless offices in various technical capacities, I decided to listen to my intuition and pursue a career in the horticulture industry. I have now been with ANP since 2012, and feel grateful to be able to work so closely with nature every day, and to help the company evolve.
